EVENTS
What does 2023 have in store? We’re continuing with our bi-monthly Action Hours, and we expect that there will be many more opportunities to learn and take action. Watch this page as we set our agenda for the year!
Indivisible St. Paul Books, Media & Democracy Club
Like a book club but we talk about books, articles, podcasts, movies, etc. that deal with democracy and the issues we all care about.
It is a monthly, casual, fun, virtual gathering open to anyone.
On January 14th we'll be discussing "The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together" by Heather McGhee. In her book from 2021 - -
"McGhee embarks on a deeply personal journey across the country from Maine to Mississippi to California, tallying what we lose when we buy into the zero-sum paradigm--the idea that progress for some of us must come at the expense of others. Along the way, she meets white people who confide in her about losing their homes, their dreams, and their shot at better jobs to the toxic mix of American racism and greed. This is the story of how public goods in this country--from parks and pools to functioning schools--have become private luxuries; of how unions collapsed, wages stagnated, and inequality increased; and of how this country, unique among the world's advanced economies, has thwarted universal healthcare." (description from Goodreads)

The event on Sunday, December 10 will be a special edition of our book club. We will be reading “The Persuaders: At the Front Lines of the Fight for Hearts, Minds, and Democracy" by Anand Giridharadas. Indivisible members across the country will also be reading this book as part of Indivisible’s Powering Progress - a campaign to celebrate the benefits in the Inflation Reduction Act. The IRA is an example of how we can come together across races and places to solve big problems. The book club will be followed up by a special speaker in January.
“The Persuaders” delves deep into the art of addressing threats and injustices while extending a hand to those who may not yet share our views. The book offers invaluable insights on healing and uniting our fractured nation. If you’re new to Indivisible, you are especially welcome!

Indivisible Action Hour (Hosted by Indivisible St. Paul)
After a break for the summer, we’re starting Action Hours up again! The Minnesota legislative session does not begin again until early 2024, but there is a lot going on at the Federal level, and there are local school board and city council races all across Minnesota.
Indivisible Saint Paul invites you to action hours on the 4th Tuesday of each month (we’ll start up with twice a month once the legislature is back in session). We will provide the information and scripts - to make it easy to call or write to your elected officials while on the Zoom call. You just need to provide your energy and your own beverage. Training and support will be provided. If this is your first time joining our Action Hour, you can join the Zoom call at 4:45pm for a quick orientation on how all this works (but it's not required). And, you don’t have to live in Saint Paul to participate - most of the actions we take are either State or Federal level.

On Sunday, November 5 we'll be discussing an episode of the podcast "Amicus", hosted by Dahlia Lithwick, a journalist with Slate Magazine who covers law and the courts. In the October 21 episode, Dahlia Lithwick is joined by brand new MacArthur “genius grant” recipient Ian Bassin of Protect Democracy. They take a look at the stakes of this moment for American democracy. The title of this episode is "Donald Trump's John Gotti Moment" (but it's about much more than Donald Trump!). It's both a challenging and hopeful discussion.
Find the episode wherever you listen to your podcasts, or here's the link:

Improving Minnesota's Broken Healtcare System
Join us for an informative and lively discussion on the state of the healthcare system here in Minnesota, and how together we can work toward improving it for ALL Minnesotans.
Keynote speaker include Rose Roach, Board Chair of Healthcare for All MN, along with a healthcare leaders from the Minnesota legislature. They will provide an overview of the current state of healthcare in Minnesota, highlight how the legislative studies will inform the ultimate goal of a single payer system in Minnesota and touch on the political realities of this fight.
Healthcare is something that affects everyone at different times in our life. Most of us or someone we care about, has experienced one or more of the following (and this list could be longer!):
• Chosen lower coverage insurance because the premium was was more affordable
• deferred care because we didn't have the money to pay the deductible paid out of pocket because it was cheaper than sending the claim through insurance
• been told your prescription either isn't or is no longer covered lost your insurance because you changed jobs.
Please join us and learn from experts about the plan for simplified quality healthcare. None of us should be forced to make decisions about our very lives because we can't afford the healthcare we need.
This event is part of the Third Thursday coalition of MN Legislative Action! - a monthly public affairs speaker series focusing on the MN legislature.

Coalition Lobby Day - Paid Family Medical Leave
This event is hosted by our friends at ISAIAH and we enthusiastically support this event and hope you will too. It's past time to deliver an inclusive Paid Family & Medical Leave program where we can take time to care for ourselves or a loved one without worrying about losing income or a job. Negotiations are heating up, and the legislators have been under immense pressure primarily by large corporations trying to weaken the bill to maximize their profits. WE NEED BIG TURNOUT at this lobby day to make sure that our legislators hear our collective voice on this vitally important issue.
Registration for this and other key events can be found here

Postcard Writing Party - Wisconsin Supreme Court Election
The Wisconsin Supreme Court election, coming up in April, is being called the most important election in 2023.
Millions of dollars are flowing into the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, as the state rockets toward an election that could decide the future of abortion rights, redistricting and more in the key battleground state.
The court has a 4-3 conservative majority, with one swing conservative justice who has broken with the rest of the ideological bloc on some major cases. The April 4 election could flip that dynamic to a liberal-leaning majority.
We'll be sending postcards to voters in Wisconsin in support of Judge Janet Protasiewicz.
Join us for a fun morning of coffee, pastries, writing postcards and spending time with fellow activists.
There is a short timeframe to send these postcards so we won't be able to let people take them home to write later.
Democracy For the People Lobby Day
Indivisible St. Paul has joined the We Choose Us coalition, a Twin-Cities based coalition fighting to strengthen and protect our democracy.
We have come a long way this session, but we still have a long way to go to make sure we get the things we need to build the multiracial democracy we deserve! We're hosting a Democracy Lobby Day at the Capitol on Thursday, March 16th for you to meet directly with your legislators and remind them we expect them to take meaningful action to protect and expand our democracy.
We only get the policies our communities deserve, when we show up to tell our stories and call for the things we need. Please bring your power and your voice to the Capitol for this critical day in passing historic pro-democracy legislation this legislative session.

A Path to Fixing Our Broken Healthcare System
Our friends at Saint Croix Valley are hosting a not-to-be-missed event!
No matter our place, our race, or our economic circumstances, we will all need healthcare sometime in our lives. And we all have the right to good care that is accessible and affordable.
Senator John Marty will share his thoughts, and those of the Minnesota Health Plan Caucus, about their efforts to achieve that vision.
Sen. Marty will answer our questions: • What is the Minnesota Health Plan and the Minnesota Health Plan Caucus? • What are the legislative priorities of the caucus for this session? • How can we support the efforts of the Minnesota Health Plan Caucus?
Please join us to learn more about how we can achieve accessible, affordable healthcare for everyone who calls Minnesota home.
Senator John Marty has served in the Minnesota Senate since 1987, representing citizens in the north Metro Area. He is the author of “Healing Healthcare: The Case for a Commonsense Universal Healthcare System” and leading champion of the Minnesota Health Plan. He knows that we will never properly address health disparities and will never have truly healthy communities until all people have comprehensive healthcare.
Reproductive Freedom Day at the Capitol
Sponsored by UnRestrict MN. Minnesotans made their voices heard by electing the first pro-choice freedom state legislature in decades. But the work isn’t done, now we must show up louder and stronger than ever to push decision makers to pass bold legislation protecting and expanding abortion access in Minnesota.
On lobby day, you will have the opportunity to ask your representative to:
Repeal Minnesota’s unnecessary restrictions to abortion.
Protect patients from post-Roe attacks.
Ensure equitable and affordable access to abortion care.
You’ll get to hear from leaders and healthcare providers across the state who are fighting for reproductive freedom. The day will culminate with a rally in the rotunda. This events starts at 8:00 and goes until 4:00. It will include the resources and training you need to be equipped to talk to your representatives.
Indivisible Action Hour - Protecting and Expanding Reproductive Freedom in MN
Action Hour on February 14th will be devoted to actions related to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom in Minnesota. The Reproductive Freedom Caucus in the Minnesota Legislature has set their agenda, and they got off to a great start by passing the PRO Act in the House and Senate. But the work is not done! Our special guest is Ar’Tesha Saballos, an organizer with Gender Justice who will fill us in on the priorities and work of the Unrestrict Coalition. Join us to take action!
Action Hours happen the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. We all hop on a Zoom call, and folks discuss the topics/issues/policies we want to advocate for and why. We provide sample scripts and then we make the calls and send emails to our elected officials and ask that they pass legislation that aligns with our values. These action hours typically have federal, state, and sometimes local-specific calls to action. Starting at 5, done by 6.
Metro Area Minnesota Indivisi-Gather 2023!
Indivisible in Minnesota is hosting a Metro-Area Indivisi-Gather on January 31st, 5:30-8pm in Minneapolis. All Indivisibles are welcome! We'll celebrate our activism and the successes of last November. We'll also putting together a panel conversion with several Metro Area legislators (to be confirmed) on the DFL priorities for the current MN Legislative Session. Join us to find out what's hot at the legislature, what needs more support, and where you can plug in. There will be free food provided by Indivisible National, music and fun.
**This event was originally scheduled for January 17th.
MinnesotaCare Buy-In Launch
Sponsored by Isaiah/Faith in Minnesota. No matter what we look like or where we are from, we all need affordable health care. But too many Minnesotans have outrageous health care bills because they can’t afford health insurance, or they have high deductible plans that force them to spend tens of thousands of dollars before they get any coverage at all. By allowing Minnesotans to buy into MinnesotaCare, we can expand access to a state health insurance program that works well and offers quality coverage. This expansion of MinnesotaCare is also a big step towards a single payer system in Minnesota, the true reform that is needed to create a health care system focused on the needs of people and not the profits of insurance companies.
Lobby for the Future: A Climate Day at the Capitol
This is an event sponsored by Unidos MN, 100 Percent Campaign and MN350: Building a Climate Movement in Minnesota. Join us and 300 grassroot leaders across MN on the 25th in leveraging this historic opportunity at the capitol to win a bold, and equitable clean energy transition in MN. Participants will receive a brief and intentional training on how to lobby their legislators in support of the bill. They’ll then be organized into teams with fellow constituents to lead their lobby meetings with legislators. See ya at the capitol!

Paid Family and Medical Leave Rally
Sponsored by Isaiah/Faith in Minnesota. Regardless of our income, occupation, race, or gender, no one should have to choose between caring for a loved one and a paycheck. Whether a birth or adoption, medical illness or death, we deserve time to care. It’s time for Minnesota to join nearly every other country in the world in guaranteeing paid time to care. We’ve got a plan, the policy has been discussed for years. We just need to pass it. It’s Time to Deliver!
